When shopping for a new mattress, you'll often see terms such as layered foam, Bonnell spring and pocket spring. But what do they actually mean, and which type is best for you?
The biggest difference is what's inside the mattress and how that internal structure supports your body. Each system has advantages, so understanding the basics can make choosing your next mattress much easier.
Layered Foam Mattresses
A layered foam mattress doesn't rely on a traditional spring unit for its main support. Instead, different densities and types of foam are combined in layers to create the mattress's support and comfort.
The firmer core provides the foundation, while additional comfort layers can provide cushioning and pressure relief.
One major advantage of foam is its ability to conform more closely to the body. Foam mattresses generally provide greater conforming ability than conventional spring systems and describes quality foam mattresses as offering strong posture support.
This is particularly relevant in the South African mattress market, where manufacturers offer robust foam constructions designed for firm support and higher weight requirements. Because the springs work together, they provide a stable and relatively uniform sleeping surface. They also allow plenty of airflow through the mattress, which can help the mattress sleep cooler.
Modern Bonnell mattresses shouldn't automatically be considered basic mattresses either. Higher-specification models can combine heavy-duty Bonnell systems with high-density foam comfort layers, reinforced edges and additional support structures. South African examples are available with recommended weights of 120kg, 130kg and even 135kg per person.
The main disadvantage is movement transfer. Because the coils are interconnected, movement on one side can travel more readily across the mattress than with foam or independent pocket springs.
Pocket Spring Mattresses
A pocket spring mattress works differently.
Instead of connecting all the springs together, each spring is individually enclosed inside its own fabric pocket. This allows individual springs to react more independently to pressure.
This creates more targeted support and body contouring because different areas of the mattress can respond independently.
It's also particularly useful for couples. If one person turns or gets out of bed, considerably less movement should be transferred to the other side compared with a traditional interconnected spring system.
Pocket spring mattresses are generally more expensive than traditional Bonnell mattresses, but they're an excellent option for sleepers looking for a more responsive, premium sleeping surface.
So, Which Mattress Type Should You Choose?
There isn't one support system that's automatically best for everybody.
Choose layered foam if you value firm body support, reduced partner movement and a mattress that conforms more closely to your body.
Choose Bonnell spring if you prefer a traditional supportive feel, good ventilation, durability and excellent value for money.
Choose pocket spring if you want more individualised support, pressure relief and reduced partner disturbance.
Most importantly, don't judge a mattress purely by whether it contains foam or springs. Consider the comfort level, construction quality, recommended weight per person, guarantee, warranty and your personal sleeping preference.
